We have two items on the agenda for today!
A trip to St. Lawrence Market and a celebration of St. Nicholas Eve!
First, we’ll make an early-morning visit to Toronto’s St. Lawrence market for Sunday supper, carrots for St. Nick’s horse, and some special spices for Monday’s Advent Activity.*
*Hint: We’ll be shopping for small amounts of some of the following spices: Allspice Berries, Green Cardamom, Hibiscus, Juniper Berries, Lavendar, Lemon Peel, Lemongrass, Orange Peel, Pink Peppercorns, Kaffir Lime Leaves, & Rose Petals.
Then, this evening, we will be celebrating the feast of St. Nicholas Eve for the FIRST TIME!
St. Nicholas Day is December 5th in many western countries, and the eve, December 4th. Those who celebrate leave a shoe for St. Nicholas in front of the fireplace or on the stair, often filled with carrots and straw. If we’re lucky, those who have been “good this year” receive small sweets or baubles, in return, on St. Nicholas morning. Everyone in the family will participate, because you’re never too old….
Oh, and we’ll be making traditional Speculoos or Spekulatius cookies for the St. Nicholas celebration!
[I think we’ll try this Serious Eats Recipe!]
