Last Minute Bedroom Makover
Not to sound superstitious or anything, but we’ve had pretty good luck waiting to replace things until they aren’t just broken but waaaay past their prime. Case in point, the family bathroom that watered the kitchen for ages before we could get organized or afford to (borrow to) fix it. (I wrote about this here and here.)
Or, the “vintage” dining chairs family and friends sat in and subsequenly broke/re-broke before we found a set of close-to-indestructable chairs from a guy on kijiji who delivered them the same day.
Up until last Saturday, we’d been living with a broken bed frame and a 50% functional chest of drawers for going on seven years. How many times does the mattress have to fall through the ever-widening bed frame (on your side) and crash onto the plastic storage cubbies underneath before you get yourself together and do something about it?
Well, last week, I went on a trip to Ikea to help a friend find a few things, and I ended up coming home with a receipt for a platform bed with storage, two nightstands, and a delivery date. Of course, our little self-imposed #oneroomchallenge meant that we basically spent our entire weekend with allen wrenches and animated instruction manuals. But, I can’t tell you how fantastic it is to sleep on a mattress you’re absolutely sure will not drop down several inches every time you lie down. While I was out looking for sheets and a replacement duvet, I also picked up some giant pillows at Home Sense to use as a substitute headboard. (Our chimney juts out where we like to keep the bed, and I’d been searching for a solution for ages.) So, I suppose, the upside of waiting until things are waaaay broken is that you appreciate their replacements to the nnnnnnth degree? #teamprocrastinators
For those of you who like a good before-and-after or a pinterest-style inspo sheet, I’ve posted a couple of things, below. I’m sure our room will be messy again faster than you can say, “Instagram” or open a bag of chicharons. One thing’s for certain, though. Our mattress isn’t going to lose altitude any time soon!
