Holiday Sashiko
This Friday Crafternoon’s project is to learn Sashiko. In the fall, I sewed some snow-grey linen scraps into table napkins to match our 2023 holiday tablecloth (The Kali from Watson’s Chelsea Bazaar in Stratford – pictured below). Today, we’re going to consult a few Sashiko books and try to stitch a section of each of those six table napkins with a few different Sashiko patterns.
We’re looking at Susan Brisco’s Sashiko 365 and Nihon Vogue’s Simply Sashiko for instructions and templates, which we’ll transfer to the napkins with pencil, chalk, or disappearing ink before stitching our small samples. We’re hoping to find or design patterns that vaguely coordinate with our tablecloth. Perhaps we’ll find designs which resemble holiday ornaments or winter flora and fauna.
Supplies: We had the fabric on hand, which I’ve quilted into serviettes, and we’ve purchased Bohin Sashiko needles and Daruma Sashiko thread from our local Fabric Spark.
