New Year’s Eve Film Fest 2023
For this year’s New Year’s Eve Film Fest, we’re doing something we’ve never done before: choosing films we’ve not yet seen as opposed to dependable favourites. Tonight, we’re focusing on European directors and European locations for films whose “hijinks” sounded like they might help us sweep out the old year and bring in the new with at least a measure of playfulness and joy. As for the spread, once again, we’ll order Chinese food from our go-to spot and pop the cork on a bottle of bubbles. Here’s a list of the movies we’ve chosen in alpha order, NOT the order we’ll view them in, noting the date, direction, location, and a brief synopsis:
European Hijinks
God Help the Girl (2014, Murdoch, Scotland)
Three Glaswegians, each at crossroads in their lives, form a band.
In Bruges (2008, McDonagh, Belgium)
After a job gone awry, two hit men take some down time in Bruges.
La Dolce Vita (1960, Fellini, Rome)
A week in the life of a philandering tabloid journalist in Rome.
L’argent de Poche/Small Change (1976, Truffaut, France)
Episodic comedy-drama of small-town childhood in Thiers, France.
Paddington (2014, King, England)
A displaced Peruvian bear must escape a taxidermist as he strives to make a new home in London.
Shallow Grave (1994, Boyle, Scotland)
Three friends from Edinburgh discover their flatmate is dead but flush with cash. Hijinks ensue.
As an added bonus, I’ve decided to put Scrapper on the list!
Scrapper (2023, England)
After her mother dies, a 12/yo Londoner gets by selling stolen bikes until her estranged father reappears.
Happy New Year 2024!
SSJ is now officially on vacay! See you some time later in January!
