Easy Homemade Kahlua [Coffee Liqueur]

Someone in our house has a soft spot for White Russian cocktails. Who can blame him? THE DUDE ABIDES! So, I’m planning on making enough Kahlua today to give my partner a full bottle and bring a set of small mini bottles as favours to a “cocktail-exchange” party I’ll be attending next week. It takes little to no time to make your own Kahlua. And the ingredients are easily scalable depending on how much you have on hand. Plus, said coffee liqueur has an impressive shelf life [think years, not months!]. My Easy Homemade Kahlua [Coffee Liqueur] should definitely last you all season…if you pace yourself.

Easy Homemade Kahlua [Coffee Liqueur]

This recipe is easily scaled up or down! Makes approximately 1.5 litres.

Ingredients

  • 3 c Strong Brewed Coffee
  • 3 c Sugar
  • 3 c [750 ml] White Rum [Swap Vodka if you want a subtler flavour]
  • 3 tbsp Pure Vanilla Extract

Instructions

  • In a saucepan or pot, combine 3 cups of coffee and 3 cups of sugar and bring to a gentle boil over medium heat.
  • Once the liquid just begins to bubble and steam, lower the temperature to simmer.
  • Simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Remove the pot from the heat and cool completely. [You may transfer it to a clean heat proof jar to speed up the cooling slightly.]
  • Add the rum [or vodka] and the vanilla and stir until just combined.
  • Decant your coffee liqueur into one or more clean bottles with a good seal or tight-fitting lid.
  • Seal.
  • Store in a cool, dry place. The shelf life of this beverage is 1-2 years.

When you say “strong coffee,” how strong are we talking? Am I putting double the coffee grounds into my French Press, or am I doing more than that? I know to make a cold brew concentrate, it’s typically a 1:1 coffee grounds to water ratio. Which I know is probably more than hot brew concentrate would be just due to the nature of the cold brew process. So I’m just looking for a frame of reference.
    Thanks!!!

Oh, I just mean your favourite cup of jo! It doesn’t need to be doubled! Thanks for helping me clarify!

Mary, I’ve never tried with instant coffee prepared with boiling water. I try to use a really good brew for the kahlua since I’m often making it for my spouse as a special treat. But some people prefer the taste of instant coffee for their everyday cuppa. And I think it would probably work…Do let me know if you try it and like the results! – RSC
