Homebodies
It’s a Carols and Cookbooks Advent Sunday once again. As for the carols, the kids are finally home and we’re all together. So, we’re going to sit at the piano tonight and sing our hearts out. As for the cookbook….well, for SSJ Advent 2021, we chose Nigel Slater’s A Cook’s Book as our “Santa Lucia Cookbook Club” selection. We cooked all day and made some absolutely superb dishes. So, this year, we’ve chosen Slater’s Christmas Chronicles to keep us warm.
Like Henry’s Roast Figs, Sugar Snow (for which Slater wrote the introduction), we now own Slater’s Christmas Chronicles in both ebook and hardback — another go-to tome indeed. (As you can tell, the SSJ cookbook cabinet is heavily winter focused.) This book is perhaps the hyggest of hygge. I can’t stop poring over each and every page. I can’t even list all of the things I want to try. Though a few at the top of mind are the Aubergine with Lentils and Basil, Banana Cardamom Cake, Lamb with Coriander and Rosemary, and Soft Cheese Polenta with Roast Onions. As with our other cookbook selections (Diana Henry, Yvette Van Boven), we’ll also be looking through the Christmas Chronicles and earmarking recipes for our Feast of the Seven Fishes next Sunday!
