New Year’s Eve Film Fest 2024: Eccentric Families

New Year’s Eve Film Fest 2024

For our annual New Year’s Eve Film Fest, we’ve decided to focus on Eccentric Families. We’re not so much interested in dysfunctional families as creative, found, and unconventional families. For 2024, we’re mixing up a few favourites with a selection of films we’ve never seen before. And, for the umpteenth time, we’ll order Chinese food from our go-to spot and pop the cork on something bubbly before the clock strikes. Here’s a list of the movies we’ve chosen in alpha order as opposed to the order we’ll view them in:

Eccentric Families

Bringing Up Baby (1938, Hawks)
A palaeontologist in search of funding for his museum gets mixed up with a quick-witted woman and her pet leopard at the home of the woman’s rich, oddball aunt.
The Daytrippers (1996, Mottola)
After discovering a love letter written to her husband by an unknown, a woman piles into a station wagon with the rest of her colourful Long Island family and heads to New York to trace its meaning.
I Capture the Castle (2003, Fywell)
Two sisters, living in a dilapidated castle with their nudist step-mother and a father with writer’s block, balance the bonds of sisterhood with their first (and second) loves.
My Man Godfrey (1936, LaCava)
On New Year’s Eve, a bizarre wealthy family adopts a “forgotten man” as their butler, only to discover they may need him more than he needs them.
Paper Moon (1973, Bogdanovich – Polly Platt, Production Design)
A con-man teams up with a young girl who may or may not be his own daughter. Together, the duo perfect and protect their grift.
Perfect Days (2023, Wenders)
A man finds peace in his routine, listening to his vast cassette collection whilst cleaning Tokyo’s public toilets, while dealing with his estranged family and witnessing others deal with theirs.
Raising Arizona (1987, Coen Brothers)
An ex-con and ex-cop make off with a baby from a set of quintuplets. Hijinks ensue.
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001, Anderson)
A woman and her three adult children (child-prodigies) reunite with her prodigal husband / their father in a New York City brownstone.
Tampopo (1985, Itami)
A truck-driver stops at a small, family-run noodle shop and enlists himself in helping the chef develop her ramen into an award-winning dish.

Happy New Year 2025
